How to become an electrician in South Africa
There is more than one way into the trade, but most electricians follow the same four steps. Requirements change from time to time, so always check the details with your college, SETA or trade test centre.
1. Study the theory
Electrical N1–N3 at a TVET or private college, or the NCV electrical programme, gives you the theory. Maths and science at school help a lot.
2. Get workplace experience
An apprenticeship or learnership with an electrical contractor, usually funded through a SETA such as merSETA or EWSETA, combines college work with real jobs on site.
3. Pass the trade test
The trade test at an accredited trade test centre makes you a qualified artisan. Assistants with years of experience but no papers can apply through Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL).
4. Register as an electrician
To sign off electrical installations you register with the Department of Employment and Labour as an electrical tester for single phase, an installation electrician or a master installation electrician. Many people call this the “wireman’s licence”.
Want to work on solar? Become an electrician first. Solar, inverter and battery installations are electrical installations, so you need the electrical training and a registered electrician has to sign them off. Once you are qualified, the SAPVIA PV GreenCard assessment is a good way to show your solar skills.

How to be a better electrician’s assistant
Focus on the work, learn instead of just showing up for the pay, and turn hard work into a trade test.
How to write an electrician CV that gets a call
List the work you have actually done, not a list of services. What to include and how to send it.
Job seeker FAQs
Have a question about working with us? Email info@electricianworx.co.za.
Are you hiring right now?
We don’t always have an open position, but we keep every CV on file and contact you when an opening fits your experience, so it’s worth sending yours even when no job is advertised.
Can I phone to ask about a job?
Please don’t. Our phone line is only for customers booking electrical work, so we can’t take job applications or CV questions by phone. Email your CV to info@electricianworx.co.za and we’ll contact you when an opening fits your experience.
Can I apply without a trade test?
Yes. We’d like to hear from electrician’s assistants and students too. Tell us what work you have done and where you are in your studies.
What does an electrician’s assistant do?
An assistant works with a qualified electrician: carrying and preparing materials, running cables, chasing walls, fitting plug points and lights under supervision, and keeping the site neat. It’s a good way to learn the trade before the trade test.
What is a wireman’s licence?
It’s the common name for registration with the Department of Employment and Labour as an electrical tester for single phase, an installation electrician or a master installation electrician. You need a trade qualification first.
How should I send my CV?
Email it to info@electricianworx.co.za as a PDF or Word document, with your name and phone number, and the job you’re interested in in the subject line.
