Tripping & earth leakage
Breaker or earth leakage that won’t stay up? We test circuit by circuit to find the cause instead of guessing.
Find out moreHighveld storms bring lightning, power surges and water where it shouldn’t be. We fit surge protection at your DB board, check your earthing and repair what a storm has damaged, neatly and safely.

A surge is a short spike in voltage, from a nearby lightning strike or when the power comes back after an outage or load shedding. It travels along the wiring and can damage anything plugged in: TVs, Wi-Fi routers, gate motors, alarm panels, pool pumps and inverters.
A surge arrester fitted in your DB board sends that spike safely to earth before it reaches your appliances. It only works if the earthing is sound, so we test the earth connection when we fit it.
Surge protection lowers the risk; it can’t stop a direct lightning strike. For sensitive equipment we also recommend plug-in surge protectors at the point of use.

Fitted and wired neatly into your existing board, or included when we upgrade the board.
We test your earth connection, because surge protection depends on it.
Burnt plugs, damaged breakers and circuits that won’t come back on after a storm.
Outside lights, plugs and gate circuits that trip the earth leakage when it rains, replaced with weatherproof fittings.
Protection for the circuits feeding gate motors, alarms and electric fences, which are often hit first.
Surge protection on the AC and DC side of backup and solar systems.
After a storm: if the earth leakage keeps tripping or something smells burnt, switch off at the main switch if it is safe to do so and call us before resetting it again.

Pretoria and Centurion get frequent summer thunderstorms, and power returning after outages can also cause surges. A surge arrester at the DB board is a sensible way to protect the appliances and electronics in your home.
It reduces the risk from surges coming in on the wiring. Nothing at the DB board can stop a direct lightning strike, so unplug sensitive equipment during a bad storm when you can.
Usually water getting into an outdoor light, plug, gate motor or cable. We test each circuit to find which one, then fix or replace the fitting. Our earth leakage page explains more.
